How To Set Up A 120 Sled By: Shawn Sterne
STUDS & CARBIDES (http://www.woodys.com) Woody’s sells race carbides for 120’s that work good. They need to be sharpened before they can be used. Woody’s also sells a green grinding wheel for your home grinder that works well for this. You could also get a race team at the track to lend you there grinder. Do not change the angle of the carbide while sharpening, as this is an item that is checked in pre tech. Studs for the Rear Suspension (Numbers Listed Below is a Starting Point) Beginner Stock classes 20 to 30 studs Stock class 30 to 60 Improved Stock Classes 60-80 I suggest you purchase the studs from Woody’s. Also, make sure you purchase the studs for your model machine as the stud length is important. This is checked in race tech. I suggest you purchase a stud height gauge and check your stud height after you install them. This is also available from Woody’s. The ISR rule is 3/8” above the heights part of the track.
120 SUSPENSION SET UP Remove the rear suspension and strap it down to a lower ride height. This can be done with rubber belting, steel cable or chain. The front suspension must also be strapped down usually done by using a strap or steel cable from the upper shock bolt to lower shock bolt. When you do this, you’re trying to lower the machine evenly in the front and back. The lower the machine sits the better it will corner. Remove the bearing seals on all the suspension bearings and remove the factory installed grease with carb cleaner. Lubricate the bearing with a WD40-type spray. Doing this will allow the track to move with less friction. The easier you can get the track to move the better hole shot you will have. Lube these bearings as often as you can during race day.
ENGINE SET UP Use the lightest race oil you can get. Lube Tech offers good oil for this. The less oil you can use in the crank case, the more rpm the engine will build. I heard of some race teams using as little as 8 oz in their engines. I don’t recommend this. We used 14 oz in our Skidoo. We used an adjustable main jet that Recreational Motorsports sells (Phone # 319-365-5391). They are a little tricky to adjust sometimes. You turn the adjuster knob with no noticeable difference. We always adjusted for maximum rpm while the machine was on the warm up stand, also making sure we had a smooth throttle response. Chick this every race day as weather can make a difference on how your engine runs.
